Taiwan has Deals
for Honduras and El Salvador
Taiwan’s President Chen Shui-bian has been on another tour to
shore-up support among Caribbean and Central American nations since
Costa Rica
dumped Taiwan for China. In Honduras he pledged a five million dollar
loan and other assistance to help fight poverty. He also committed the
state-run Taiwan Power Company to help Honduras build a power plant.
During Chen’s visit
to El Salvador a trade agreement was signed that could eventually
mean exports of up to 60,000 tons of sugar tariff-free
to Taiwan each year. Taiwan has signed FTAs with Paraguay, Guatemala,
Nicaragua and Honduras, with some pending legislative approval. ww.floridashipper.com
Carnival
to Bankroll Pier in St. Maarten
Carnival Corporation has signed a 20-year deal with the St. Maarten government
and Port of St. Maarten for funding of a new cruise ship pier. Carnival
will provide $34.5 million in financing for the pier’s construction
and guaranteed a certain unspecified number of passengers to the island.
The two-berth pier will bring St. Maarten’s pier berth total to
six, making it one of the largest cruise ports in the Caribbean. Carnival
will have preferential rights to the new docking facility. Eight Carnival
Corporation and Carnival PLC’s brands will utilize the St. Maarten
pier. Construction on the pier will start next year, with completion
